Michele Bilyeu  sends these images and writes "During a time of intense personal challenges where I have often asked for shared prayers, and well wishes for members of my immediate family, the designing of prayer flags has been a natural progression of my fiber art.  I am always in prayer, and endlessly creating prayers flags from the simplest of fabric strips that I hang from trees or my prayer arch outside, to genuine Buddhist prayer flags specially delivered from the city of Mungpoo in the Darjeeling District of the Himalayan mountains from a dear Buddhist Himalayan blogging friend, to these special art flags that I created for Oceanside Museum of Art. 

I have followed this Prayer Flag Project blog for a very long time, and have loved all of the beautiful flags that everyone has created. So, it was a a delight to extend my thoughts, my prayers, and the making of my own flags to a greater, and deeper meaning as I created my prayer flags for submission to the Oceanside Museum of Arts Prayer Flag Project and their project submission, now to be included as part of this group!

My flags were made on my own painted fabric with raw edge applique, beads and inkjet printing. They include quotations from well known sources on their fronts, and my own prayer flag blessings (in poetic form) on each of the backs of the flags to tie them into my themes.  

Knowing that my three prayer flags are flying high with so many beautiful creations,in California,  I know that so much goodness and intent is being manifested during all of our personally challenging times and the current challenges of Hurricane/Super Storm Sandy on the East Coast.  We are all combining our energies of manifestation, and healing from East to West, and West to East and the thoughts and prayers of so many only intensify with the height, the depth, and the breadth that all of these external energies of rain, wind, and storm!"

more prayer flags for Oceanside Museum of Art!

Linda Friedman joins us on the blog today, with 7 prayer flags that she created to hang at the Oceanside Museum of Art. 
Linda writes: "Although I’ve been creating prayer flags ever since I first saw the Prayer Flag Project in Jane LaFazio’s blog, I had not signed on to be a member. Only yesterday did I figure out how to add The Prayer Flag Project gadget to my blog but once I did this, I instantly felt like a bona fide member of a world wide community linked by hearts filled with prayers for friends and loved ones and humanity at large. Since I live within a stone’s throw of the Oceanside Museum of Art, I grabbed 7 of the prayer flags I have made and took them to the museum today. To see each of the 7 flags with messages, check out my blog post today.

Yes, everyone. The museum is still accepting prayer flags and hanging them as they arrive. I hope everyone who submitted a flag will have the opportunity to see them flying in a tent formation overhead in the Oceanside Museum of Art lobby. The heartfelt messages are very moving and the variety of outstanding art seems limitless."

Prayer Flags to hang at Oceanside Museum of Art

 
Jane LaFazio here. Here they are! The prayer flags created by people from all over the world, (many of them contributors to this blog) ready to be hung at the Oceanside Museum of Art! Here is the call to artists......and you can still send in flags. They said they would keep hanging them as they come in! The flags will hang from October 14 through December 31, 2012. Needless to say, I'll post photos of the exhibition as soon as I see it!

PRAYER FLAG PROJECT

Give visual voice to your prayers by creating a prayer flag and submitting it to OMA’s Prayer Flag installation on view at Oceanside Museum of Art October 14 through December 31, 2012. Artists are invited to design a unique flag made of fabric and other materials that reflects their current and future hopes and dreams. Flags should be approximately 5” x 8” with a 3” sleeve on the topbackside of the quilt and must arrive at Oceanside Museum of Art by September 21. Please include your name, date and the desired prayer on the back of the Flag. It is suggested that the artist uses an iron on fabric label for this information.

Artists are responsible for mailing and/or delivering their prayer flag. Flags will only be returned if the artist includes a self-addressed and stamped envelope. All other flags will become property of the museum.

All contributing Prayer Flag artists are invited to a complimentary Artist’s Reception on October 13 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. and are welcome to remain for the preview reception of Quilt National the same day from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Please RSVP to Danielle@oma-online.org by October 5 if you will be attending the Prayer Flag Artist’s Reception.

The impetus behind this installation, which was inspired by OMA’s Quilt National exhibition on view October 13 through February 12, 2013, was to provide a platform for the regional quilting community to express their prayers and concerns. The OMA Prayer Flag Project is based on Vivika Hansen DeNegre’s The Prayer Flag Project from 2011. She invited people from around the world to join her in making Prayer Flags. Each flag is created in the artist’s own style, then hung outside for a while, its words and sentiment dissolving into the wind and being spread to all whom the wind touches. Prayer flags have been used in Tibet for centuries as a means to promote peace, compassion, strength and wisdom. Traditionally they are woodblock prints printed with text and images that are hung outdoors in high places where the wind passes through the flags carrying the depicted blessings to all people. Flags are most commonly found in five colors; blue, white, red, green and yellow, representing the five elements.
