For Tiffany

I made this prayer flag for my friend, Tiffany, who is in recovery from breast cancer. At the time I made it, her prognosis was uncertain as her cancer was very difficult and aggressive and was not responding to treatment as the doctor's had hoped. Today, I'm happy to report that she is thankfully on the recovery side of it having gone through a whole host of treatments and surgeries. I'm so thankful that she is alive and well!!YEAH! YEAH! YEAH!

Tiffany and I have been friends since middle school. She is a strong, gentle and kind soul. She is spiritual and is a yoga instructor. She eats and lives healthier than anyone I know. We went to our first concert together, she was my first friend to get married and have a baby, in college we took art classes together and ate lunch together in the covered patio overlooking the foundry. She travels yearly to India for instruction and yoga practice. I was so fortunate to meet up with her again this past summer for lunch at my cousin's house in New Orleans. It was so good to see her and hug her and wish her well for her fight and journey through this cancer. I was afraid she wasn't going to make it and I'm so thrilled and thankful that she did! I love you Tiffany!

The flag is made with batik from a favorite skirt of mine, part of a vintage cutter quilt, silk sari ribbon, and re-purposed prayer beads. It is both hand and machine stitched.

Prayer Flags

My flags are usually created in an intuitive way and whatever happens in the process is the result, it sort of develops on the way.

These last flags I created were for a specific reason.  A new mother-to-be in our family celebrated this coming event not with a baby shower but a blessingway ‘party’ and the woman in our family created a prayerflag for this spiritual event.

Make a Healing Flag for Jill K. Berry

We invite you to make a 'healing' flag for Jill K. Berry to cheer her up while she recovers from open heart surgery.

Size - 5x7 vertical format
Can be made out of fabric and paper (must be easy to sew through on a sewing machine on the top), because all of the flags will be sewn onto bias tape or ribbon for easy hanging. All of the elements on the flag should be securely attached, no thicker than 1/4 inch, no heavier than 4 oz and please do not use glitter on them.

Suggested motifs - Jill loves images of leaping humans (think leap of faith), and of course maps and lettering.    Keep important motifs away from the top 1" because we will be stitching through that top 1" to attach your flag to some bias tape for hanging.    You can put a non bulky lightweight pocket on the back to insert a personal note to Jill if you want but please make sure that the pocket is securely attached.

Hope and Healing

Earlier in the week here in New Zealand a little 7year old Japanese girl, named Sakurako, was attacked by four dogs. She had more than 100 bites to her face and body. We were told that 90% of her face had been destroyed. I dare not begin to imagine what this little one is facing in the days, months and years ahead, nor what her parents are going through.

 After watching an interview with members of the surgical and reconstructive team on TV last evening and reading the latest report in the newspaper this morning I had to leave the detailed Prayer Flag which I was working on for a friend with cancer and  made a very simple one for Sakurako. I have not written any words on the Flag, words failed me, but I hope all who read this will think of her and her parents and hope for peace and courage for them all in the years ahead.

The design and stitching is basic but I wanted it that way, showing ragged edges and stitches, just a heart symbolising love.

I have hung the Flag onto the rose trellis outside our lounge window on the verandah, others will join it there.

This is my first post as a direct contributor so if I have "strayed" in any way please do let me know.

Flags for Boston

Today we are joined by Shari.   

"I took a day off from my usual painting to make some prayer flags to send love, peace, and healing to all those involved in the recent Boston bombings.  All I could use was my supplies that I already had (I don't have a car) so I had to use what was on hand.  I sewed, stamped and embroidered 12 flags, measuring about 9 x 11.  Using hemp twine to hang them on my porch, I sent hope and love into the wind to travel all over the world.  

I have family and friends in Boston, so it really makes my heart ache to see it all on TV.  Maybe my little effort will ease someone else's pain.

Healing

Get Well Flags

Moira  Hill sends this update: "Here are all the flags together - I've sent them to my friend, and they're now hanging in his hospital room -  he's had the bone marrow transplant and doing well! He will be in the hospital for a few more days and then will need 3 months of follow-up care. 

I left room on the last flag ("May I be happy") for people to write on it what makes them happy. He says that everyone who sees the flags is cheered by them." 

Healing Gift

These flags were made by a group of friends as a healing gift supporting a friend.  It is not the first special set I (Linda Miller) have organized, but this one had extra meaning for me, as the recipient is one of my dearest friends. Flags for breathing and healing

Sona Nast made these flags for her friend, Paul, who recently had a double lung transplant due to having pulmonary fibrosis. Sona writes "he is recovering well so far.  There is a fund raiser for him this week and I'm going to bring the flags for him (he won't be there because of his fragile immune system).I hope he likes them and that they bring him good healing."
