Community Flags

Alexandria Zettler from this post has sent us some more images of a community project

"Here are some more photos of our group’s prayer flags. We plan on hanging them outside the art center on July 2nd.
Our focus is sending positive intentions out into the community, giving thanks for our island community, and mine are hopes and dreams for my daughters. Our group leader chose the traditional Buddhist prayer flag colors and we are hanging them in that order when we put them on the line outside. These are just a few. We have over a hundred flags made."

Garden Trio

From Carolyn Hanson.
"My second little flag trio is for our backyard. The first picture I snapped captured magical little rainbow prisms of color, not visible to the naked eye. No photo filters were used; must be the sweet power of prayer~
Continued thanks for your inspiring blog.
Always,

Care"

a new contributor

My first attempts were inspired by your blog.
On left, (partially covered w/clothespin!) hopes for my ailing Scottie dog.
Middle: my broken heart when my other Scottie died after first one recovered.
Right: my first attempt, including wool felting, for my 5 children's hopes & dreams.

A trio of flags

Today we hear from Care Hanson

I've hung & loved Tibetan prayer flags for years, but never thought to create my own until seeing your lovely blog posts.
This trio was made as a birthday gift for my son-in-law, an avid gardener and brand new dad. Sewn into the scraps are thoughts of love & peace for him, my daughter & grand baby, Luciana.
Thanks for the inspiration; next I'll sew a few for our backyard~

Flags by the Global Piecers

Lis Harwood has joined us to tell us about the prayer flag swap she is organising as co-ordinate of the Global Piecers group.

"These "Global Piecer" prayer flags will be flying off around the world and were made with some very special friends in thought and prayer.  On each flag is written the particular prayers for the individual.

The prayer flag to the far right was made for a very special "indigo sister" who is caring for four different loved ones with severe illnesses/problems at the moment and hasn't a moment or the energy to care about herself.  My prayer flag for her includes prayers and tears.

Lis has put together an interesting post on how she put these flags together here.

Making Prayer Flags

Michele Bilyeu on a class making prayer flags with quilt guild members.

I had a wonderful time teaching a class on the making of "Peace and Prayer Flags, Garlands, Pennants, and Bunting" at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreal, Oregon for our local Mid-Valley Quilt's "Quilt College".

What a great group of women! Each and every one went 'outside of her personal' comfort zone in creating peace and prayer flags, making them as individual as possible. And every single one of these lovely ladies added something that was unique, creative, and different than my samples!

I provided kits for 14 different peace or prayer flags and they had a wide variety of individual kits to choose from even among their favorite 'looks'.  I provided choices that included patriotic, country, Victorian, rainbow 70's, religious, spiritual, just plain cute, and native cultures and traditions. But of course, I didn't tell them, what was what, or give any advice on select and being me, they could switch ingredients and ink jet quotations if so desired.

And they did!....

from Helsinki

The Prayer Flag project

Greetings from Helsinki, Finland!

My name is Annika Lund, and for two years I've been teaching embroidery to a group of wonderful, creative, fun and wise women at a centre for adult education in Helsinki, Finland. When it was suggested that the group put together an exhibition of their work, I asked the ladies whether they would like to join the prayer flag movement and include a line of prayer flags in the exhibition.

In order to encourage as many as possible to participate, I suggested that the 'prayers' could remain private for everyone, and that nobody needed to share their personal thoughts unless they wanted to. And as for 'prayers', every embroidered piece is a map of the embroiderer's life and thoughts in any case, as it is such slow work that you have the time to have many thoughts while you're working. Often you remember long afterwards what you were thinking, or where you were, when you worked on a particular piece.

Ten flags were subsequently made and displayed in the exhibition, and the fact is that they were such a success that they made it into the education centre’s newsletter. One of the flags even graced the cover of the newsletter!

And now it is time for the flags to join The Prayer Flag Project. Here’s an image of all the flags together, and if you want to see each of the flags in detail, please head over to my blog at www.salundannika.blogspot.fi.

Thank you to The Prayer Flag Project for the initiative to spread good will and inspiration all around the world!

For John

Today we hear from Maryly Matthewman

" This is our Prayer Flag Protect. We renamed it Wish Flag Project for John Bradley Thompson but the ideas are still the same.

John Bradley is a little boy currently at St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis receiving radiation and chemotherapy for a very rare brain tumor, DIPG.  We had our kick off day today with the Wish Flags and we gave out 85 flags and people were very generous in their donations. Many more flag kits are coming. Here are some of the flags.

John is in Memphis with his net at the ready to catch all the wishes."

Collection from Chigaco.

Karen Hoyer has sent in these lovely photos of flags created at her church

"Your site really inspired us! Our church, St. John's Episcopal in Chicago, created a series of Prayer Flags and Wish Trees.  We were celebrating Rogation Sunday by blessing the soil, the seeds and our new beehives.  Our inter-generational project was to write our wishes, prayers and dreams along with pictures or symbols, onto the Prayer Flags and the strips of fabric for the Wish Trees.  They will hang in the church's garden all summer."

Thank you Karen

More flags from New Orleans

"Here are my prayer flags that I finished & hung today.  They represent my prayers for all creatures great and small, my tree of life is my prayer for all mankind, and my prayer for living in  peace with our worldwide neighbors.   I can’t wait to see the Dalai Lama tomorrow in New Orleans."

Prayers in the park

Robin, Billy, Jonathon, Jonah,and Diana
Donna Mitchell from Schertz, Texas has sent us these photos.

"My prayer is for Love because I believe everyone on this earth deserves to be loved. My wish is that the wind will carry this little prayer to someone who really needs it. I took 5 children that I love to the park and told them the story of the Prayer Flag Project. We all made our prayers and our flags as uniquely different as we each are!"

Thank you Donna

Flags for Boston

Today we are joined by Shari.

"I took a day off from my usual painting to make some prayer flags to send love, peace, and healing to all those involved in the recent Boston bombings.  All I could use was my supplies that I already had (I don't have a car) so I had to use what was on hand.  I sewed, stamped and embroidered 12 flags, measuring about 9 x 11.  Using hemp twine to hang them on my porch, I sent hope and love into the wind to travel all over the world.

I have family and friends in Boston, so it really makes my heart ache to see it all on TV.  Maybe my little effort will ease someone else's pain.
Thank you for letting me share this with you."
