Welcome Sunshine!

Prayer Flags

Ever since pinning these to my Prayer Flag board on Pinterest. I have been wanting to do something similar.
Yesterday , while some lovely but rare Winter sunshine gave us a much needed reprieve from all the rain and gloom that has been with us for what seems like forever, I finally managed make some similar flags.

Prayer Flags
Gratitude

This one is to express my gratitude that my coastal home has come through unscathed from the huge storms that have been battering the British coast. We are high up, away from the danger of flooding and thankfully the roof tiles are all still in place. Many others have not been so fortunate.

Prayer Flags
Springtime Dreaming

I am sure that I am not the only one willing Spring to arrive. A gift from across the ocean did all the work for me with this one, as the threads and silks just fitted the bill for this wild flag. For now these are safe from winds and back inside, but I look forward to giving them a spot in the garden once conditions improve.

Prayer Flags

...and while I have your attention :D ...
I want to thank those of you who continue to send us your prayer flags. If you are looking at this via a Reader come take a look at the new header that I have put together, and for those who have been asking for a blog button with code, there is now one done.
Keep those flags coming. All kinds are welcome, whether you have spent hours or simply thrown them together in a lot less time!!
Stay warm and safe, Deborah

Seasons Changing

Deborah here. Today I wanted to show how I like to make my flags by recycling or re-purposing fabrics and bits and pieces that I already have.
Many of the flags that I have created have been from discarded projects or bits left over.

This flag is no exception.
I recently had a tidy up and sort out and found a piece of fabric that I had printed and forgotten about. A friend suggested I use it to make a flag, and while pondering what to do, my eye was caught by a garland of leaves that I made, and which have seen better days.
I removed some of the leaves and the two elements seemed made for each other.

I did toy with the idea of adding some text but decided to just let the flag speak for itself and I am using it to send all of you good wishes as this time of changing seasons, be they Autumnal or otherwise, external or internal.

You can see the original piece of fabric here, and the garland here if you so wish.

I think that turning these bits into Prayer Flags is a great way use up that stash. try a new technique while also creating something that hopefully others will find comforting in times of distress or life enhancing, and hopefully I have inspired you do do the same.

from the Heart

Blog land has been awash with hearts today. Mine included :)
Thinking that it would be nice to have a heart here, I have quickly made this, showing that the flags do not always have to be intricate, beautifully stitched pieces. This was done in well under an hour, using textile pens and some very simple stitching.

It is already dark here in the U.K. so not the best photo, but I would like to wish all our readers and contributors, the Valentine's day they wish for.

Let there be Light!

Can I get away with that as a title?
U.K. readers will know that the days have been overcast and grey here, with low levels of light for months.
I am so glad that the nights are getting shorter.

Working on this has brightened up my evenings.
Completed yesterday, it seems today my wish has been granted, as this morning I find blue skies and sunshine!

So my prayer to everyone is that the light is shining, wherever it is needed.

Focus

Deborah here. I recently finished a piece based on the tradition of Welsh Quilting. Naturally there were a few scraps.

I have a busy few months coming up and I need to Focus. Hope these flags help, and wishing you all the focus you may need to get through.

Playing

Hello, Deborah  O'Hare here. Over at my Quilt Routes blog I have recently set myself the task of using up some scraps that have been hanging around for quite a while. I am having a lot of fun and enjoying the process.

This flag came from the scrap bag. Sometimes it is good to put aside those things that have to be done and to just play. I hope you too can find the time for some play.

Acceptance

Hi, Deborah O'Hare here. It seems to be a while since I last posted a flag and I guess that is simply down to life getting in the way of things. This is so often the way don't you find? Thankfully, for me, nothing major, just a reassessment of plans.

This flag was made yesterday afternoon and it took me less than an hour. I already had this scrap of fabric and the design  is one that I have explored before here and here. Sometimes you just need to get on and do something; maybe accept a situation, and move on.
I hope you are able to find acceptance, from yourself and others, if you need it.

Creative Courage

Deborah O'Hare here. I recently took an on line e-course entitled Creative Courage. The title alone has inspired me. Sometimes all we need is the courage to do things.

I am assuming that you are here reading this because you are creative, or trying to be so.

These flags have been made to wish you all courage in your creative pursuits.

Health and Recovery

Deborah O'Hare here. These flags are for a good friend of mine who is going through a tough time at the moment. She lives near me, by the sea, and I am hoping that the restorative powers of living by the coast will help her along her path to Health and Recovery.

They were done on a piece of fabric that spoke 'shoreline' to me and was exactly the right size to make two flags.
I am wishing Health and Recovery to anyone that is in need of it.

....and then there were three.

Deborah O'Hare here. I couldn't leave the one flag that I made for Christmas stay solo. Not least because these have again been made from a chopped up quilt, and I have a lot more dove blocks to use.

It is far too wet, windy and gloomy in Wales to take any photos outside at the moment, so these flags are bringing me a bit of peace inside my cosy work shed.
I wish for Peace for you also, (if you need it).

Wishing you a Peaceful Christmas.

Deborah O'Hare here. If you are like me, around about now you are feeling totally frazzled by all the preparations.

So with that in mind I wish you all a Peaceful and Restful Christmas, and Happy and Fruiful New Year.

Sanctuary.

front

These flags are for the hope that everyone who needs it can find Sanctuary, be it spiritual, emotional or physical.

back
For some reason I feel compelled to make them visual from the back as well as the front.

I also seem to have to make them in groups of three.

back

They have been constructed on hand painted fabric and added to with bits of a quilt that I cut up (follow the link to see that I really did cut it up) because I wasn't very happy with it.

A Prayer Flag for Protection.

Hello.
My name is Deborah O'Hare and this is my first post on The Prayer Flag Project. With that in mind I hope you will indulge me in a bit of selfishness with my first flags.

I have made these for myself and my family, for Protection, after having experienced not one, but two house fires within eight months this year.

Buddist umbrella of protection

The first was a shed fire, but the whole back of the house was badly damaged from the heat of the flames.

The back

The second was a kitchen fire back in August, and as I write this I am still without a kitchen, eagerly awaiting the fitters to come along and put in a new one.

Woven Strips
I don't tell you this to promote sympathy. No-one was hurt and I count my blessings.
But I would be lying if I tried to deny how unsettling the whole experience has been.

Protective Celtic Knot

"Amddiffynion"-Welsh for Protection

So these are my flags, and my attempt to protect us from anything else the Universe might be planning to throw at us!

You will find me living in the UK on the South Wales coast, with my husband, two teenagers and a dog named Rosie!
I blog at thebluehare and Quilt Routes and I would love it if you came for a visit.
I am thrilled to have been asked to contribute to this great project.
See you again soon!
