Support & Love

South Coast Hospice is a Non-Profit Organization that provides Palliative care and support to people living with Cancer, HIV/AIDS, and Motor Neuron Disease. Included in our programs is the care of children both infected and affected with Aids. (many Orphaned) The level of Tuberculosis (TB) and Multi drug resistant TB is extremely high in our region and we have a special team of dedicated carers who travel out everyday to treat these patients
.
We work in a region of South Africa - KwaZulu Natal which has a Vast rural impoverished area, where the resources are low and yet the SPIRIT is abundant!  Most of our work is done in the patient's homes and through our Mobile Clinic. We do have an In-Patient Unit - Kingfisher House, which  offers respite to the patients and their families, pain and symptom Control as well as end of life care.

Every year family and friends of patients that have passed away in the year are invited to attend a special candle lighting ceremony. which is organized by our Grief and Bereavement Volunteers. Each person attending has walked an arduous journey with their loved one, attending the memorial ceremony will not be easy to do and for most, it will take an act of courage.

Our Hospice is humbled by the countless acts of bravery and dedication that families have shown to support their loved ones.  This year we will ask them to draw close to each other and they will see the the prayer flags flying out for them, like the weary travelers climbing out through a dark ravine, and up towards the the sun.
The messages on the flags will speak to the bereaved of the beauty of love, the very presence of faith and hope,  of compassion and the sheer joy of life!
These flags have been made by the children on our program, patients, staff, volunteers, families and our hospice community in a visual and vibrant display of our love and support for each other.

Flag Friday

Text and imagery are a large part of any prayer flag.  There are many ways to add text to your flag and this week we'll talk about stamping and writing on flags.

Some people enjoy printing text directly onto their flag while others will put the text on paper or fabric and stitch it to the flag later.  No matter which method you enjoy, testing your products out first is always a good idea.  I have lined up different types of fabrics to show how each method of stamping and writing looks.
Starting from left to right we have:  PFD (prepared for dyeing fabric), commercial solid, hand dye, commercial print, three hand dyes and another commercial solid.
Not all stamp pads are waterproof on fabric. Craft Test Dummies has a wonderful comparison of various stamp pads on fabric and their washability.  I like using Memento Luxe from Tsukineko.  The ink is made specifically for Mixed media work and works well on fabric.  This is the ink I will be using on my samples.

Rubber stamps are readily available at craft, scrapbook, major fabric stores, some big box stores, and always online. The first row of Joy in the photo below was stamped using individual letter stamps I picked up from my local craft shop. They are affordable (especially with a coupon!) and versatile. The letters in this set are about 1" tall.

One of the hardest things about stamping onto fabric is remembering that you don't need to push the stamp into the paper like the ink will run away!  Doing so will often give a ghost image of the edges of the stamp (as you can see on all my letters below!)  If you like that look then stamp with all your might!

The large letter A's that are stamped at the bottom of the black fabric were created using acrylic paint.  Paints can easily be pounced or brushed onto stamps and provide a nice image. Just make sure you wash the paint off quickly so that it doesn't gum up your stamps!
"Love" is a stamp I carved from my own handwriting and an eraser.  I left the stamp rough (little bits not carved away) so that the stamp didn't look manufactured.

Here are a few links on how to carve your own stamp:
Hand Carved Stamps (blog tutorial)

If you want to add your own hand writing directly to the fabric there are many wonderful pens and markers on the market.  I have demonstrated a few in these photos:
Silver, White, Gold and Copper Zig Fabricolor pens flow nicely across the fabric.  Zig also makes other colors but I only have the metallic and white.  The white often needs to be applied a few times on dark fabric to get a nice opaque white but it still makes a nice line.  The markers say they are a fine tip but they are thicker than I would have imagined.  I used the white marker with my letter stamps to create the word Love at the bottom of the black fabric below.
The next line of joy's were written with a Sharpie Grip Pen in purple. They are surprisingly smooth to write with on fabric and I think would be ideal for writing out an entire poem, song lyric or prayer onto a flag.  The line if very fine.

The next line of joy's were written using the Sharpie Fine Point Pen.  The pen is a bit thicker than the Grip Pen by Sharpie but still writes smoothly across the fabric.

The next line of Joy's were made using a Pigma Micron Pen, size 005.  Micron's have been a staple for writing on fabric for many years, and while it is my favorite for drawing with on paper, I don't enjoy using it on fabric.  The pen doesn't glide across the fabric but sticks and stutters making writing difficult.

Finally at the bottom right on the white PFD fabric is the Pentel Gel Roller for Fabric.  This pen glides across fabric like butter!  It is so nice to write with, however each pen does not contain much ink and so it has lost favor with me.  The pen I was using for the sample above is on it's last leg and so I'm afraid the sample doesn't give you a good indication of just how beautiful it writes when new.

*Tip - Iron a piece of freezer paper onto the back of your fabric before writing with any pens or markers.  This will keep your fabric tight and flat and much easier to write on!

Do you have a favorite pen or marker for writing on fabric that I did not cover?
Next Friday there we will have a guest blogger, Belinda Spiwak, showing how to make a gelli print prayer flag.

Spreading the Fun

Linda here... I wanted to share some photos with you from recent prayer flag workshops that I have led.  It is good the share the process with others as they delve into the (often) new territory of creating flags.  Fun was had by all!

A Heartfelt Collection

From Carrie Austin

"Hello,  This is my first time posting my prayer flags, though I've been reading the posts quite often on your blog.  Thanks for the inspiration to make these!   Garden Prayer Flags: The last couple of years I've made some memorial prayer flags, and flags representing each of my kids, but this year I'm loving the actual idea of a prayer flag. Writing a prayer on a flag and letting the prayer travel as far as the wind blows is a beautiful thought.  These are my prayers for the people I love: HEAL for my 7 year old niece Elina's heart! She's had to have open heart surgery, with more procedures to come.  This is also made for any physical healing needed by others. LOVE, A prayer of love for those missing their angels in heaven, no matter the age. I pray that we can feel their love for us, and love others to honor them. I added my angel baby Cassidy's name for me, but it's for everyone. PEACE for those experiencing a pregnancy after a loss. It's the second hardest thing I've done in my life, after losing a baby. Nobody else understands the anxiety of every minute, so I pray that my friends will feel some peace in the days and months ahead.  HOPE for those struggling with infertility.  I pray for them to have hope in God's plan, and hope in good things to come! Thanks again for inspiring the world in crafting beauty."   Carrie Austin

In Celebration

Lis Harwood has made this flag for her husband.

"I made it for my beloved, Alan, who was 70 years old this weekend (but we are whispering that large number).  His favourite colour is deep red.  He saw me working on the flag but had no idea it was for him, only when I gave it to him on Sunday did he say that he'd particularly noticed it because of the colours but hadn't thought it might be for him, he loves it.  My prayers on it are for Love, Joy, Health and Long Life."

A trio of flags

Today we hear from Care Hanson

I've hung & loved Tibetan prayer flags for years, but never thought to create my own until seeing your lovely blog posts.
This trio was made as a birthday gift for my son-in-law, an avid gardener and brand new dad. Sewn into the scraps are thoughts of love & peace for him, my daughter & grand baby, Luciana.
Thanks for the inspiration; next I'll sew a few for our backyard~

"My Valentine of Love"

From Michele Bilyeu...
Oregon is facing the challenges of a huge snowstorm. We live down a long, long country road driveway and we haven't been able to leave the house since Friday.
And on Thursday, I learned that my brother Doug, of Eagle River, Alaska was put on a ventilator and into a medially induced coma.
This is the second time in just 2 years that my brother has been rushed by paramedics to Providence Hospital in Anchorage unable to breathe from severe cases of pneumonia.
What is a worried sister, whose heart is filled to bursting with love and prayers to do?...

All You Need Is Love

prayer flags

Michele Bilyeu here

All You Need is Love

It's February, and our thoughts all go to Valentines Day, hearts, and love, love, love.
Are you singing the Beatles's song? I know that I am!  But then I grew up with long hair, skinny suits, mini-dresses, dangly earrings, tie dye, rainbow colors, graffiti, and hoping and praying for love and peace everywhere!

Oh, wait...those are all still here... and yet back "in" again!  They might have a new name or a slightly new look, but it's all part of how patterns all repeat in our lives. All we need is love..and somehow, that never, ever, changes.

So, I'm hoping and praying for peace and love...here, there, and everywhere. Peace for the Super Bowl, Peace for the Winter Olympics, Peace for our homes and in our hearts!

And what have I been doing?......making peace and prayer flags...it's all about love!

Joy, Love, Family

Making prayer flags has become quite a healing journey for me, as an artist.  Working on a smaller scale enables me to create works, without feeling overwhelmed.  As I pause to remember what is special to me at Christmas time, I see joy, love and family all around me.   ~ Jamie Fingal

A Collection

Prayer flag

Today we hear from Susi Costello.
"I made my prayer flag as part of Carly Marie's healing project to help break the silence surrounding child death. My flag has embroidered panels for love, light, and truth as well as one with my daughter Tigerlily's name and the day she was born/died. It was both incredibly difficult and wonderfully purposeful to make these in honor of my daughter."

"West" and "Boston"

West

Today these flags are from Faye Cook.
"I've been making prayer/ memorial flags on and off for years (if I don't make a flag its a spirit doll).
Some are for peace love and happiness and some are about events that have happened in the world or to me. Making flags or dolls about whats happened helps me come to terms with different events as well as placing a prayer out there.

'West' is for the folks at West, Texas after their fertilizer factory fire/explosion.That must have been a hell of a night of chaos and worry a bit like being to hell and back."

Boston-front

"Boston is of course about the Boston bombings, if you look at the swirls they make question marks because I just don't understand how you can do something like that."

Boston-back

"My response to such a horrible event is to love ,love those how suffered and love those who caused the suffering. That is why the flip side of Boston flag has the old slogan of "make LOVE not war" on it.

Hoping you like or at least can relate to my prayer flags"  cheers Faye

Prayers in the park

Robin, Billy, Jonathon, Jonah,and Diana
Donna Mitchell from Schertz, Texas has sent us these photos.

"My prayer is for Love because I believe everyone on this earth deserves to be loved. My wish is that the wind will carry this little prayer to someone who really needs it. I took 5 children that I love to the park and told them the story of the Prayer Flag Project. We all made our prayers and our flags as uniquely different as we each are!"

Thank you Donna
